Dick Harmon: Beo also not returning?

If this is true that Beo, Guinn, and Aytes are all not returning next year, that opens 3 more scholarships up. So returning scholarship players include Bryant, Childs, Dastrup, Emery, Haws, and Shaw.
We are waiting to see if Mika enters the NBA draft.
Seljaas returns from his mission along with Andrus, Nixon, and Worthington.

Those players would consume 11 of the 13 scholarships.
PoPoola had verbally committed but has yet to sign his LOI.
There is room for at least 1 more scholarship player for next year. Here's hoping Rose can find someone worthy of spending it on.

Sounds like Rose has felt some heat from Holmoe and is making huge changes to the program.

I doubt. PoPoola ever plays for BYU.

Is it too much to ask for some hustle and mental toughness on the players' part.

Seems to me Rose has bought into this idea of "we just need more talent" when we need to get more out of the talent we have.

Rose has done better with lesser talent. He and others seem to keep forgetting that.

The irony to me that many of our freshman show toughness and effort in the first 3-4 games they play for us. But over time that effort level wanes.

If Beo and Guinn leave, then we are going to be very thin on guards and wings.

If Beo and Guinn stay then we are still very thin on guards and wings that can play....

What is the percentage of non-out-of-eligibility guys leaving or being cut from BYU over the last few years? It seems like what used to happen every once in awhile is now happening to 4 or 5 guys a year.

I dove into this topic on another thread, it really is worth a good read and checking out the link in that post:

http://www.cougarcorner.com/viewtopic.p ... 20#p235662

Here's the post if you don't feel like clicking...

Well, I was wanting some hard numbers for BYU's transfers compared to other schools and I found this site:

http://www.verbalcommits.com/transfers/2016

I really wish I could get that data into Excel and create a pivot table (I'm a pivot master lol) however the data gets all pasted into one cell so it just doesn't work. But, you can sort it by Previous School to see how many transfers each school had in 2016. BYU had 3 and browsing through the data sorted by team this is not all that un-common. Utah actually had 7!! Utah St. had 5! So maybe now the transfer thing isn't that bad...?

The other data I'd like to incorporate into the above transfer list is the previous team's record. Part of me thinks that a team like Kentucky and Duke that are loaded with high star bench players would be the most likely to have lots of transfers. Although the other part of me says that players love to be on winning teams so maybe teams with worse records tend to have more transfers. Villanova, who won it all last year, had zero transfers. North Carolina had zero. Kentucky - 2. Duke - 1. UCLA - 1. Interesting...

Finally, I looked at BYU's transfer trend:
2016 - 3 (Corey Calvert; Jordan Chatman; Jake Toolson)
2015 - 2 (Frank Bartley IV; Isaac Nielson)
2014 - 2 (Matt Carlino; Ian Harward)
2013 - 1 (Raul Delgado)
2012 - 2 ( Demarcus Harrison; Nick Martineau)

So, yes, we had more last year than we used to, but it wasn't a huge spike that I had thought. But maybe it's the quality of the players that left were higher than in previous years?

seems to be trending upwards too, if this year is any indication we may have as many as 5 or 6?

The problem with that analysis is that you are comparing what should be a stable program (Rose has been here since 1997 and head coach since 2005) with schools that are anything but stable (Utah has had Giacolleti, Boylen, and now 80K during Rose's tenure as head coach, and USU went from Steady Stu Morrill to current coach Diarrhea who has yet to post a winning record in conference).

So if you're telling me we're in the same boat as the U or USU, that's not exactly a calming observation.

We still seem to be losing more players more frequently than in the past. Half a team is a lot of turnover.

Me thinks there are some issues with the staff.
