Kaufusi...

Let me be the first to state I'm no expert rather just your typical armchair coach weighing in on what I think I saw. That in mind, I can't remember Jock scoring while Kaufusi was on him. He may have had a couple free throws but that's the most I remember.

* Why wouldn't Rose put in Kaufusi and Mika together and make the other team adjust to our size? Are we not quick enough with both of them in the game?
* Couldn't we play some version of a 3-2 zone with TJ, Nick, Bryant, Rose, Beo or Guinn on the perimeter while those two bigs clog the middle?

Childs didn't have his best game last night, IDK why. Freshman? Trying too hard? Just an off night? Anyway, just some thoughts/questions for those of you who know more than I or at least want to discuss some things that haven't been discussed here that I can recall. Oh, and while I didn't love every single attempt made by Nick or Elijah I'm not as down on them as some on another BYU fan board I've read. It just felt like an off night. We missed 5 or 6 shots right at the rim including layups and baby hooks. They will fall some nights and other nights will be like last night.

BYU is still fun to watch albeit frustrating at times. But life goes on.

Go Cougs!!!
J. Child (no relation to Yoeli as it is spelled differently but I would still LOVE to get a jersey with his name on it for when I play churchball  --Anyone know if they sell them in the bookstore?)

Kaufusi is only ready to play 2-3 minutes stretches due to poor conditioning. So not an option at the moment. You are right on Jock not doing as well on Kaufusi. Corbin is a much better post defender than Mika due to his better lower body strength, superior length and better technique.

If Kaufusi was in shape, playing both of the them together would be good on D. But it would really clog the paint. Childs is at least a threat to catch and drive. Kaufusi isn't much of an offensive threat. Playing Mika at the 4 would expose him on the perimeter and likely cause foul trouble.

IMO Childs struggled with the length, discipline and strength of SMC. Childs gets a lot of rebounds with superior athletic ability. But when the other team is disciplined enough to keep a body on you and that body is stronger than you-- you look pretty average.

I think Bryant had a bad stretch to start out but settled in to play a good game overall. He was really effective at using a pick from Mika to get into the lane.

Emery has bad decision about every 4 minutes. The rest of the time he is pretty good.

He's not a basketball player and should focus on football.

Yoeli was double-teamed, and couldn't handle it.

Bryant is selfish, and missed far too many shots. I much prefer him on the bench.

I think you are letting your impressions of Bryant in previous games overshadow what he actually did in the this game.

I see this game in 3 parts. First Bryant comes into the game for the first time in a month and a half. He is a out of control and takes 3 bad shots.

Then he settles down and finds some good shots around the basket. Next in the 2nd half he gets the ball and SMC's defenders are giving him a wide open 3. So he takes it. He makes two in a row. Then he misses the 3rd. I forget exactly when but I think his and one was just before this. The key was he was turning into enough of threat to keep the SMC D honest enough to give Mika a chance to work.

Then we have garbage time and he puts up some more bad shots.

IMO, for the first time for the majority of his minutes Bryant played a good game. He was inefficient in his shot-making just like the rest of our guards. I wish we could be going this process a month ago.

For reference:

http://byucougars.com/node/116707/#ui-tabs-1

TJ Haws went 3- 10 from the field with 1 assist in 31 minutes. He finished with 7 points and no TO's.

Nick Emery went 3-8 with 2 assists in 32 minutes. He finished with 9 points and 2 TO's.

Bryant went 4-12 with 0 assists in 19 minutes. He finished with 11 points and 1 TO's. Note I clearly remember a play he hit Emery on a fastbreak that was a made layup and 1.

Oh I guess I should say I am very hopeful for Bryant to succeed because we don't have another player who can slash to the rim like him. Emery and Haws rely on flip shots. Bryant does it with power and athletic ability.

Unfortunately for Bryant his first minutes in nearly/over a month were extremely poor.

BYU is trailing 17-18 when he checks in for LJ Rose. Emery is at the FT line and hits a tying FT after the substitution. Here's the play-by-play for his first minutes.

SMC layup, 18-20.
Then, Bryant misses a 3-pointer. 18-20.
Emery steal & Bryant makes a layup 20-20.
SMC 3-pointer, 20-23.
Bryant misses a layup, 20-23.
SMC jumper, 20-25.
Childs misses layup, 20-25.
SMC 3-pointer, 20-28.

Bryant subbed out.
