Re: Valpo vs BYU
Granted we dealt with a ton of foul trouble, but we were soft on the defensive glass. We gave up 13 offensive rebounds tied a season high allowed (w/ Coastal Carolina) and our 26 defensive rebounds were a season low (previous low was 38).

Re: Valpo vs BYU
If I'm not mistaken, it was the ball to the face that got him the technical. Haws totally lost his cool there. The extended break in the action while they looked at the video was a blessing in disguise, though, that game was on the brink of getting out of hand.Qman wrote:Haws was out best player IMO this game. His 3 pt shot was going and he had some great drives. The angles I saw on his technical didn't look like an elbow to me. More like a shoulder bump.

Again, a stat that would have been different if the ref's hadn't benched all our bigs 5 minutes into the first half.SpiffCoug wrote:Granted we dealt with a ton of foul trouble, but we were soft on the defensive glass. Maybe. Maybe not. We did not have good effort in rebounding by anyone.frdbtr wrote:Again, a stat that would have been different if the ref's hadn't benched all our bigs 5 minutes into the first half.SpiffCoug wrote:Granted we dealt with a ton of foul trouble, but we were soft on the defensive glass. The bigs who did play didn't rebound well. Rebounding is largely about effort. We didn't get after it.
Davis played 28 minutes and had 0 offensive and 3 defensive rebounds. That's a poor defensive rebounding effort.
Mika played 19 minutes and had 1 offensive rebound and 2 defensive rebounds. That's a poor defensive rebounding effort
Dastrup played 8 minutes and had 2 offensive and 1 defensive rebound. That's a poor defensive rebounding effort
Aytes played 10 minutes and had 1 offensive and ZERO defensive rebounds. That's a poor defensive rebounding effort.
Childs played 11 minutes and had 0 offensive and two defensive rebounds. That's a slightly below average defensive rebounding effort from him (he'd been averaging one rebound every 3 minutes).
Shaw played 4 minutes and had 1 offensive and 1 defensive rebound. That's a pretty good defensive rebounding effort.
Even when Mika did play, he didn't rebound well. Again, he had just two defensive rebounds in his 19 minutes. That's a poor rate.
He had 9 defensive rebounds in 19 minutes vs St. Louis.
He had 9 defensive rebounds in 25 minutes vs Coastal Carolina.
He had 3 defensive rebounds in 15 minutes vs Coppin St.
He had 9 defensive rebounds in 34 minutes vs Princeton.
Before last night he had 30 defensive rebounds in 93 minutes. That's one every three minutes. He had one every nearly 10 minutes last night.

Re: Valpo vs BYU
This team shows tons of reasons to be excited for what's to come, but I would have loved to see us pull out a W. Re Haws: it was frustrating I'm sure, but I hope we see no more of any BYU player letting frustration get to him to the point of throwing an elbow or ball in the face.

Re: Valpo vs BYU
They were in foul trouble. They had been called for ticky tack fouls all night long. When you say they had a poor rebounding effort, it may have looked that way but when you are trying to stay on the floor, you aren't going to crash the glass as hard to try to keep from fouling out. Mika got called for over the back calls at least twice if I remember, that is not a lack of effort foul.SpiffCoug wrote:Maybe. Maybe not. Re: Valpo vs BYU
Both of those were on offensive not defensive rebounding attempts. I think both can be true. BYU was soft on the glass. We didn't work hard to get in good rebounding position and we didn't adjust to how the refs were officiating.frdbtr wrote:They were in foul trouble. And the refs had a very poor effort as well, both teams were called for multiple fouls when they failed to contact an opponent, but a ref, from 30 feet away, was able to see through four players and "see" this contact.

Re: Valpo vs BYU
Suggesting that BYU needed to "adjust" to the style of reffing is at best a conventional but unrealistic feat with this set of refs. Horribly inconsistent. They refused to call like-kind fouls on their star player.
And when you think about it, BYU did just that--they adjusted to crap calls that took them out of the game and were tentative on rebounding the rest of the game.
Pretty simple analysis. Something computers and computer geeks can't contextualize.

Re: Valpo vs BYU
They did need to adjust. They needed to quit jumping over the back for rebounds. What they needed to do was work harder to get in better position so that when the shot was missed they were between the rim and the opponent. Instead, BYU decided to not stop jumping over the back, but apparently stop fighting for good rebounding position as well.
