Who will be starting first?
So who is gonna win a starting spot first?-
Tyler Haws (over Charles Abouo)
OR
Brandon Davies (over Chris Miles)
? ? ?
Haws has proven to be a strong rebounder, and has the same scoring mentality that Fredette has. Abouo is stronger and more physical though, and has more experience in our system.
Davies is VERY physical for a new freshman, and has a ton of potential. BUT he is also young and makes the kind of mistakes typical to a newcomer (fouling, etc.). Meanwhile, Miles is a senior, but he doesn't play up to his potential at all. Big body with the occasional good game, but a weak post defender who also struggles taking the ball hard to the hoop.
Both freshmen could be starting by the end of the season, though maybe they will be quick off the bench with a spark all year. But if one them them DOES win a "top 5" job, which of them do you think will accomplish that first?

Re: Who will be starting first?
Davies needs to start to get him ready for the tournament. He will take us farther than Miles will even though there will be growing pains. Haws has a lot of competition for minutes.

Re: Who will be starting first?
Haws will start much sooner than Davies.
The difference is who they'd be starting over.
Haws is competing with Charles Abouo for time. Charles is the athletically superior of the two; however has shown the propensity to slow down the offensive game of the Cougs, get lost at times, and turn the ball over.
Charles has the highest pts/per minutes played and rebounds/per minutes played on the team. He can produce. The issue is how well he goes with the flow.
Haws is not nearly the defender that Charles is, but Tyler has tremendous hoops IQ, knows where to be on the floor, knows how to get contact on the drive, and how to avoid turning the ball over. Tyler flows almost seemlessly with this offense.
There will be matchups where starting Tyler is a great idea and other matchips where athletically Tyler would be tremendously outmatched and Charles will play the bulk of the minutes (like San Diego State, etc.)
Tyler will also help sell a lot more tickets in Provo than Charles (though I doubt that really has any bearing on the minutes he's getting)
Charles is not an incumbent starter, so this could be interesting all season. Regardless, he'll get minutes because next season Haws is on his mission and the 3 is Abouos.
Dave Rose likes Chris Miles. He likes how much space Chris takes up, he likes how a lot of opposing players fear taking the ball inside against Chris. The issue here? Chris isn't nearly as intimidating as he looks; in fact he can be pretty soft. So why start Chris? He's a bonafide returning starter and senior. (Charles Abouo is not)
Davies is active, quick, and fearless... he's also incredibly out of control at times; foul prone (really foul prone) and he brings the kind of energy that you like to see from a guy off the bench... he's going ot play alot but Miles is the starter.

Re: Who will be starting first?
Okay, good post here craig.
Haws has shown up very well so far. Led the team in game 1 in rebounding with 7, led the team in game 2 in assists with 6.
Abouo is good but slightly over-hyped. Kind of like how near the end of last season Hartsock became this "can't miss" all-star. Good kid, but what has be done so far this season? He's basically equal across the board with Miles and Anderson, and last year with Collinsworth. Here's to his future growth!
