Post by Mars »

"An NCAA committee announced Thursday that it will back a proposal to prohibit making scholarships offers to recruits before July 1 in the summer between their junior and senior years in high school. If passed, it would apply to all sports."

Wow. This'll change Bronco's strategy slightly.

If this does pass. Would this take in effect from here on out?

Or would it void USC's offer to that 13 year old QB -- David Sills?

All this means is that the big summer football camps will now be in July, not June. So the BYU camp, the Nike camp, the All-Poly camp all will get pushed to July so that schools can offer kids after they see them perform at those camps. now they are in June, so it is just a matter of weeks. Either that or the rule gets revised to apply June 1, which I think is more practical for camp schedules. Not sure why April 1 wouldn't work though as it gives parents plenty of time to consider offers for their kids and then verbal months after the season has ended. Other than that, not sure it affects things too much. I think it is a good thing. Creates a buzz and urgency to verbal around the deadline.

My High school had its last few classes at the end of June. Given the offices a few weeks to finalize transcripts and July 1st makes a lot of sense from that High school persective.

There's that , AND you have to give teachers enough time to grade final exams so that they CAN meeet the final transcript requirement.

I wonder how this date impacts the few but growing number of year-round schools.

It seems like coaches are just going to make "soft" offers prior to that date, telling recruits "we'll be offering you July 1." All this really means is that kids can't commit until July 1.

That was my first thought. Nothing to keep a coach from telling a kid "we'll be offering you the summer after your junior year!" when he's still a freshman in high school.

Q: How much of an influence do you think USC's Lane Kiffin - offering a 13 y/o QB a football scholarship for the year 2015 - had on this proposed rule??? Hmmmm????

Way to go Kiffin!!! What a doinkus shankerpotamus!!
