Did Covey ever begin? Nice kid. Smart kid. Just not a D1 football player.

How does this scholarship situation work out now? Will Covey still get to finish his schooling under his schollie or does BYU revoke if from here on out???

I remember USC football facing this same exact situation last year(with a different type of injury), and they still honored their schollie to their injured athlete after doctors said he can't play anymore.

Does the NCAA have certain rules as to IF the school still honors it, can they use another on someone else???

The NCAA doesn't, but for tax reasons the schools make them one-year deals that get renewed.

Does BYU have a policy that protects the student-athlete if they face a situation where the doctors say they can't play that sport? Like, to honor their word and continue to give that student a schollie each year until that student graduates?

For a scholarship to be tax-free to the student and get favorable treatment for the school/donors, the money for tuition etc. cannot be contingent on the kid actually performing anything. As soon as they make the $ contingent on his services, it's salary and all the tax consequences kick in for everyone involved.

The one-year scholarship offer/contract obligates the school to pay the scholarship for one-year, and then they choose whether to re-offer the next year. This protects the school from someone who accepts the offer, but then never does anything. Yeah, there is no rule preventing them from making 4 or 5 year offers, but can you imagine if BYU was still on the hook for Ryan Kessman's tuition if he decided to reenroll for a BYU education instead of a Montana education? He'd still have time left on his clock, and there is nothing the school can do--if they want tax treatment, the only condition they can put on the scholarship is "enroll here." That's why players sign "National Letters of Intent" and not binding contracts. All the NLI does is satisfy an NCAA recruiting provision preventing other schools from wooing the player.

So, yeah, the school could still pay the kid's tuition, and my guess is that this is generally the case and that BYU will take care of their own--contract or not, an athletic department that doesn't stick by its students is going to have problems recruiting once word gets out. Covey should be covered by his latest scholarship, assuming all of the players accept their schollies at the same time the incoming recruits do. However, I doubt Stephen Covey is going to have a hard time finding an academic scholarship, and worst case scenario, his dad could probably afford to shell out $10K a year for tuition.

As if the Covey family is worried about BYU tuition...

From Coach Rose on Monday about their apparent lack of scholarships from next year (they are recruiting, but we only lost four players, and we have four coming in): "And you commit these scholarships for a year, and then you go to re-commit them again, and there is always an opportunity for me, and the way we run this program, to have that scholarship committed for the next year, or for the next year. They are not four-year scholarships that are committed."

Kessman could not use his old scholarship. He got kicked out of school and I highly doubt, admissions would let him back in.
