Rule #1 of any sports forum for fans: don't bring any sort of rational logic to the discussion I could not agree any more with what you have posted here.YNot wrote: ↑Mon Feb 05, 2018 12:16 pm BYU basketball is fine. We've been in games against the two top-15 teams in our conference. What coaching decisions would have made a difference at LMU? More Worthington and Bergesen?
Who else was Holmoe to hire for head football coach? If he hires Nuimatalolo, Cougar Nation revolts because we're running the option. Cougar Nation revolts if we hire Grimes - or anyone else - other than Ty freaking Detmer. He had to take that chance and let it play out.
With hindsight, it is clear that we cannot survive front loaded schedules. We're not just playing LSU or Wisconsin or Utah. We play all three in consecutive weekends. I'm afraid we will see a similar breakdown the next couple of years - Arizona, Wisconsin and Washington road games in September? Too much.
But had Holmoe NOT scheduled these games, we would complain about weak schedules.

Re: Sitake has no clue what he is doing.
I like that someone says Holmoe should not have his job and then:
1) They support that argument by saying Sitake has sucked
BUT
2) Someone comes along to say "Hey, Kalani's not that bad" (someone who obviously didn't watch the Portland State, UMASS or any of the other non-P5 games where Kalani's team looked inept against cellar-dwellers), and blames the poor result on Tom Holmoe's scheduling.
The takeaway? Holmoe should be fired for scheduling ineptitude, not his hiring ineptitude (assuming you didn't watch Portland State, UMass, etc.).
Everyone agrees Holmoe should be fired, we are just arguing about exactly why.

Re: Sitake has no clue what he is doing.
I agree with what you are saying. My problem with Holmoe is he took a long shot at getting Kwhit and when that didn't work, the only guy he pursued was Sitake. Lance Anderson at Stanford was interested but he said "they had bigger fish they were looking at". Coach N at Navy wasn't seriously considered because they told him he couldn't bring his option. There were other guys that could have been considered but other than trying to get Kwhit, Sitake was the only guy and that is what irritates me. We should consider all interested candidates and pick the one that brings the best option to win. IMO we didn't do that, we were too obsessed with getting a former Lavell player.YNot wrote: ↑Mon Feb 05, 2018 12:16 pm BYU basketball is fine. I personally hope that Lance Anderson still wants the job. I suspect that it may be open again in as little as 9 months...frdbtr wrote: ↑Mon Feb 05, 2018 4:06 pmI agree with what you are saying. C'mon guys, can't we agree that no one is responsible for anything and that nothing is anyone's fault?

Blaming Mars might be the single, truthiest, comment on Cougar Corner in the history of the site.

I don't think any of us really know what Holmoe did or didn't do.frdbtr wrote: ↑Mon Feb 05, 2018 4:06 pmI agree with what you are saying. We know that Niumatalolo flew out to Utah and interviewed. Met with Elder Oaks. That's pretty serious consideration. Apparently, Holmoe tried to convince him to be the head coach, instead of an option coach.
We also know that Pete Carroll was contacted about Bevell. And, not sure we could have afforded him or convinced him to accept an offer - even if he was the right fit. Similar analysis for most other "candidates" that were coaching in the NFL.
What other guys am I missing? Cougar fans would have revolted if we promoted Robert Anae.
There is no indication that Lance Anderson is or was a better head coaching candidate than Sitake. I think Anderson is better with fundamentals, technique and as DC. But, I actually lean that Anderson's personality isn't the right fight for a head coach.
Kilani Sitake was a good, but not great, hire. He may yet prove to be a good coach.

Re: Sitake has no clue what he is doing.
we have quotes from 2 candidates including coach N from Navy that they didn't feel like they were seriously considered. That is the point of my post.YNot wrote: ↑Tue Feb 06, 2018 2:23 pmI don't think any of us really know what Holmoe did or didn't do.frdbtr wrote: ↑Mon Feb 05, 2018 4:06 pmI agree with what you are saying.
