Holmoe needs to go. Tennessee fired it's Athletic Director (John Currie) because ...... of a messy search process to find a new HC. It's important for football teams to not only win, but have stability and move forward in a reassuring way. Otherwise, student athletes decommit, transfer, or sign somewhere else. or simply show no interest Expect Holmoe to keep his job and the Coug program to remain a cement mixer.

Kalani is going to get another year, that is apparent. If we have another year like this one, it will be time to clean house, Coaching and AD depts.

Jay Hill just parlayed BYU interest into a nice extension at Weber State.

Don't know how close he was to coming, but he got something for it.

Dick Harmon has an interesting article today. I'm glad that it seems everyone sees the patently obvious: Ty Detmer is LOVED by BYU fans, and we all are pulling for him.

https://www.deseretnews.com/article/865 ... etter.html

BYU’s search for a new offensive coordinator remains active and intense and a decision could come soon but it remains uncertain if the school will try to beat the new Dec. 20 early signing date.

It would help, and I’d expect that is a target.

The NCAA mandated a new signing period for the first time this year. Before, it was the first Wednesday in February. This year there is a signing period that begins Dec. 20 for 72 hours and closes on Dec. 22.

Is this handicapping the Cougars? It could be. Kalani Sitake is aware of it and I’m told he is working almost around the clock on both recruiting and finding a replacement for Ty Detmer. Most of his staff has had to maintain schedules and keep appointments and travel plans that were made prior to the Hawaii game. They are keeping to that agenda. Sitake's offensive staff remains on contract and will be paid through July 2018.

Detmer is in Texas at his ranch this week, but is expected back in Provo by Friday or Saturday, I’m told.

Speaking of Detmer, I will say this, Sitake loves Ty and has always seen him as his childhood hero — just like many fans. This has not been an easy transition although a decision to move on was made.

There exists a huge swell of support and concern for Detmer among BYU fans. I would say the majority, by far, remain in his corner no matter what has transpired or who is hired, and they’d like to see him employed by BYU in some capacity at any cost.

Sitake is well aware of the sentiment. This past year when BYU conducted fan fests all across the country the two longest lines were for him and Detmer, and Detmer’s was longer. He patiently joined Sitake until past sundown when the last fans left and lines were gone. This feeling among Sitake’s current staff is the same, from those I have come across during the past 10 days.

So, there’s that.

To say this is a most interesting hire for Sitake and athletic director Tom Holmoe is an understatement.

There is a ton at stake.

Perhaps I'm reading Harmon's article through my own lens, but I get the sense that he's also frustrated by both the firing of Detmer and the lack of a succession plan. The tone and word choice leads me to believe that Dick is none too impressed.

Interesting that the rest of the offensive Offensive staff is out on the recruiting trail. Can you imagine how awkward those conversations must be when the recruits ask who will be their coach?

The early signing period will certainly benefit programs with a steady, stable coaching staff. I think BYU under Mendenhall could have picked off a few recruits from programs in coaching limbo. Now we are the carrion.

Also interesting that Ty is back at the ranch. Between that and ZD's tweet that he's decommitted from BYU, my guess is that Ty has already decided not to return and he's coming back on F/Sat just to clean out his office.

I wish Ty would recognize that there were aspects of being the OC that he could do without (or at a minimum could use some help with) and would come back as the QB coach, but I don't see this set of events pointing in that direction.

I’m concerned with all that is going on. Kalani was 2-10 at Oregon State (giving up 37 points per game), his only big gig away from K Whit at Utah. So he brought his asst defensive coordinator from Oregon State with him. And apparently is considering the former OC from Oregon State as OC because he has experience. Gary Anderson resigned prior to the end of the season. How does “experience” and losing make someone successful ? How much of the defensive play calling at Utah did he rally do? Or did Kyle keeps his hands involved in that? Has he ever successfully made a dynamic coaching pick? His record of 2-10 was worse than Ty’s yet he got promoted to a head coach. Roderick got fired as OC at Utah and was apparently consulting with Ty last year. He is also under consideration. This looks grim to me. I think that Ty’s talents may be more suited for NFL caliber QB’s. The reading by the QB (and receivers) of the defense just wasn’t getting done. It’s great to win the punt, pass, and kick competition, but the mental part is also important. The new OC is going to have to deal with these issues as well. Good luck with the search...

I'm with you in this concern. I cannot believe that Roderick is even under consideration. If he is picked I'll have 5 or 6 hours of more time on Saturdays this fall to pursue a new hobby.

Which doesn't mean much.

I agree with Harmon, which also doesn't mean much.
