New games scheduled

Post by Fido »

Houston:
BYU will host Houston at LaVell Edwards Stadium in Provo on Oct. 17, 2020, in the first game of a renewed home-and-home series. BYU goes to Houston for the return game at John O’Quinn Field at Texas Dow Employees Credit Union (TDECU) Stadium on Oct. 7, 2023.

Georgia Southern:
BYU and Georgia Southern will meet for first time in a series scheduled for the 2021 and 2024 seasons. The Cougars will play at Paulson Stadium in Statesboro, Georgia, on Nov. 20, 2021, and then host the Eagles in Provo on Oct. 12, 2024, at LaVell Edwards Stadium.

Hawaii:
BYU and Hawai’i have added a new home-and-home series in 2024 and 2025. The Rainbow Warriors come to Provo on Sept. 14, 2024, and the Cougars return to Honolulu the next season on Sept. 6, 2025.

Interesting to see some adjustments to the future schedules.
- Hawaii is on the schedule in 2024 and 2025 in September. It doesn't appear 4 P5s in September are the annual plan.
- Boise State had previously been announced on 10/17 in 2020. Houston takes their place. I'm guessing Boise State either slides to 10/10 or 10/31.
- Hawaii joins Utah State and Boise State as MWC regular opponents with the new H/H added to future schedules.

I guess you can say it's better to pick and choose the MWC opponent we enjoy facing than having to run the whole gambit of a MWC slate. Still interesting to me that we have never scheduled any regular games with Colorado St., New Mexico, Wyoming, or Air Force--teams we have history with all the way back to our WAC days.

I never really liked playing Wyoming (probably because playing them always felt dangerous somehow ... they'd get up for us, and when we'd win we got nothing from the win ...), but I've always thought that Air Force was a great team and a good match-up with classy players and fans. I'd love to see them get worked into the schedule.

Meh, Wyoming fans had such a deep dislike for BYU, but still it was great to beat the top team in the neighboring state.

Air Force is a good opponent, but I always remember how team members feared having to deal with AF's chop blocking and once a year they would have to scheme differently for just the one team as no one else played the option besides AF.

I believe Bronco was interested in scheduling AF again after we left, but with their MWC slate, playing the other 2 academies and Notre Dame, they don't have many openings.

In total honesty, I've been most surprised about CSU. I would have thought there would have been more interest in scheduling a game on their side, and we're not turning down many interested parties in our independent life, so I can't imagine TH has never made a call. Just don't know and I'm not missing playing them, but again, it's a game that we could schedule that it's not impossible to travel to without a lot of effort.

It's too bad the Big XII is so dysfunctional that the games with Houston won't be conference games.

Boise State also made a few date adjustments for games with BYU. The Broncos have moved their 2020 game vs. BYU from Oct. 17 to Nov. 7 and their 2022 game vs. BYU from Oct. 8 to Nov. 5.

Nov. 7, 2020 was the date previously mentioned for BYU vs Missouri--so that date must have moved as well.

The problem with scheduling Air Force is they have 4 OOC games and annual games with Army and Navy. Then have 1 FCS game, and so have room for only 1 OOC game per season.
It is funny how those front-range 4 have held fast at the "won't schedule BYU as an independent" stance they had when BYU left the MWC. They seriously think that by boycotting BYU will eventually be back in the MWC.

There are actually five such petulants. SDSU hates BYU and has refused to play. They did get pushed into a bowl game with us though, when Kyle Van Noy disappointed them with 14 defensive points in the fourth. Good times.

Houston is a tough program to schedule, honestly.
