I'm hoping that the game was a breakthrough and BYU wins again this week. The SJSU game was the first one all year where I felt the team attacked both offensively and defensively the entire game. Utah state they attacked in the 1st quarter and then went completely soft on both sides of the ball once Hoge went out of the game.

Good job Spiff. This is enlightening--thanks for posting it.

There is only one problem with the first game--the pilots of the University of Portland don't play football. The Portland State Vikings sort of play football, and that is the team BYU beat.

This is what BYU looks like when they're aggressive, even when they're down with injuries, seem hampered by underprepardness for the game or undeveloped skills (such as an inaccurate quarterback or a quarterback that doesn't check down with his reads, as opposed to a quarterback that doesn't see anyone open), or playing a team that physically outmatches them. Anyone will HAVE A CHANCE when they're aggressive. Play to win, you might lose, but you have good chances to win. Play to not lose, and you often give up the game because you don't strike out to obtain a solid advantage.

The summary stats at the end are the most telling. Thanks, Spiff.

BYU's defense played above average in the majority of its games.
BYU's offensive play was the worst our opponents have seen in all but one game.

I had gotten to the point where I stopped just blaming the O, and was thinking the D was just as bad. The D is bad, but the O is waaay worse.

And as much as I want to believe that we've turned a corner, I need to remind myself that one data point does not a trend make.

Half of me thinks the offense may finally be breaking through. The other half thinks the team probably took it easy during the week this week and will once again lay an egg on Saturday.

It all depends on if the offense is allowed to attack or not. When Kalani makes statements in the media like "if the offense doesn't screw it up, we will be ok" it seems to take away the aggressiveness of Ty's play calling. The shackles were taken off last week and the offense looked better.
