I also find the comments that the fault lies with Mangum, who is obviously not a very good QB. But last year he was the clear answer and was the guy who would be able to run the pro style offense best. I mean, if a 4 star, co-elite 11 mvp can't run a pro style offense who can?
Last year, Taysom struggled to throw accurately, but at least we moved the ball more often than not. Then when Tanner came in to play the last few minutes or take over for an injured Taysom, he played fine and was more accurate. The ball was on the money.

Then he plays in the bowl game vs. Wyoming. Rainy and muddy, not much comparison, but he struggles. Guys can't run routes, he finishes 8-15 with 95 yards, a TD and a pick.

This year, the pro-style system is throwing him off for some reason. Maybe he isn't used to it. Maybe without depth & talent at RB & TE he doesn't have the time to throw. Also, consider the fact that our guys aren't being coached/conditioned in a way to play hard and physical, and he has no time to throw and nowhere to throw to. With this year's offense, Taysom would be throwing <100 yds/game and running for >100 yds/game, we maybe have 2 or 3 more wins.

Tanner can do well...eventually. With one more year of eligibility, I don't know if he will shine, mostly because the rest of the team isn't playing to their potential. Fix that, and I think he will be decent.

I think it takes another year or two to resolve our biggest glaring mistakes and put together a successful season, but it will probably be with a different QB in the pocket.

I really don't like the fact that Tanner isn't doing well and so much of the blame is landing on him. As Hawk pointed out, he was a 4-star co-elite 11 MVP ... and we all remember watching him throw CATCHABLE darts; so what's happened? Is it the receivers? Is it the line? The backs? Conditioning? Maybe life has just taken too much out of him? I don't know.

What I do know is that I've been a big fan of his, and I'd LOVE it if he could "find his rhythm" and start looking more like the "Tanner of Old". He seems like a great kid with tremendous potential (both on and off the field). I'm still hoping and cheering for him.

Tanner is a good man. He comes from a wonderful family. They bleed cougar blue. I’m sure no one is more frustrated than him. I suspect this season has been most disappointing. I’m not smart enough to understand why/how the wheels have come off the bus so badly, but knowing this young man, I can tell you I can’t imagine anyone caring more for this team than him. I believe in him.

Somehow, I can still imagine Tanner a year and a half from now completing 29 out of 30 passes at an NFL pro day, wowing the draft scouts in attendance.

There is nothing wrong with Tanner Mangum. The problem we are having is with his coaches. We all saw Tanner in 15, nothing has changed except coaching.

The problem has been inconsistency with Tanner. He is not able to consistently sustain drives or produce touchdowns. Seems to be able to make pass that is very difficult, but under or overthrows easy passes which can produce first downs. Still quick to jump the gun when pressure comes from the outside, and does not have a very good pocket presence to know when to stay and when to flee. He does best rolling to his right and slinging it on the run, however, this becomes predictable. He also misses a lot of 2nd and 3rd options when first one is covered. Most glaring stat is that they are not converting points in the red/blue zone. Three times had opportunity to score within the 10 in the ECU game they came away with 3 points. Terrible conversion rate.

The offensive line is also not providing a consistent push on the run game, and our run game is not producing well to set up the pass. We have lost several RBs (Canada, Fonua, Dye) and currently have Tolutau, Hall and Burt all of except for Hall have little experience. The receivers are still running poor routes and dropping balls. Only go to player appears to be Hifo. Inconsistent play from Trinaman, Pauau, and Tanner. For wide receivers it is likely inexperience, youth and poor chemistry with QB. Regarding the OL, there is always one guy that is off-sync on the play, which the defense exploits and blows up the play. RB positions seem to not be very good at picking up blitzing LB or DE.

We are still looking at an offense that has yet to jell and the leader of the O should be the QB. Tanner does not seem to instill the same level of confidence and trust that Beau Hoge showed vs USU until his injury. I am convinced that we would have beat USU had Beau remained in the game (ahead 21-7), and he likely would have remained a starter. At present, Tanner is who Coach Detmer believes provides the best chance to win given Detmer and Critchlow as backups. Should Tanner not perform, he will likely hand the baton to Critchlow to see how he performs if given the chance.

All of the problems you outlined above is because all of those players are being poorly coached.
