Keep in mind that Critchlow got upwards of 90% of the first team snaps in the week of practice leading up to Boise State and the coaches thought after that that Mangum at 60% was the best chance to win.

I wouldn't pin too many hopes on Critchlow until he proves he can get a first down.

It's true that Critchlow hasn't even made a first down. He may be good, but it will take time.
With Tanner, he looked good early on against BSU. Something like 7 for 8 passing. Then the wheels came off the bus. Some of that was his injury, but some was poor judgment.

They should keep Tanner on the bench with a plausible excuse that his ankle just is not better. And only bring him in in the second half if Critchlow is totally looking bad.
Instead, if they start Tanner and then pull him, it will devastate him and he very likely will have gone from a supposed potential early departure for the draft to a total bomb out in less than seven games. What a football tragedy.

Also, if Tanner starts okay, then his ankle gives him problems and his performance drops because he's 70% rather than making bad reads/judgement calls, then maybe if we pull him and let him rest and heal, he can come back without losing the rest of his confidence.

Turns out there really wasn't a leash. Tanner is BYU's QB this year and will see the vast, vast, vast majority of snaps the rest of the way. Critchlow might get to manage the final 3-and-out each game the rest of the way. So that should portend well for the future.

So far, BYU has blown Critchlow's redshirt for 2 minutes of playing time at the end of a blowout. If Mangum is the QB for the rest of the season, what was the purpose of that? Sure he needed to take a lot of snaps in practice in the event he had to play in a game, but playing the 2 minutes was meaningless.

When healthy I think they have got to go back to Beau Hoge. Critchlow is not the answer unless your throwing the rest of the season away to develope him as the starter for next year. But the same can be said for Beau. Give him this year so he can run the team for the next 2 years. Tanner thanks for the great season 2 years ago, get your degree and become successful with you education because the football part looks to be over.
