I was, and am, a Bronco fan (not the Boise-type, or the Denver-type, but the Mendenhall-type). I hope he has GREAT success at UVA, I was sad to see him go. But he's gone. (Yes, I HATED his record against Utah, he got out-coached in that match-up ... which is weird, he was the better coach (according to ESPN rankings) ...)

I LIKE Kalani. I hope he has GREAT success at BYU. BUT, right now, while he's a guy players love, he hasn't figured out how to get this program on track. Whether last year was good because of Taysom and Jamaal, or just Jamaal or something, I can't say. But the team chemistry was better last year (always is when you win and/or play respectable in the losses) ... so this is the true challenge for a head coach and his coaching staff, how to get this team to come together and start executing. I have very low expectations this year ... but hope springs eternal!

Go Cougs!

You're kidding right?

Not only is it waaaaay to early to start making those comparisons, you can't exactly make an apples to apples comparison with two different teams.

Even if we go 1-11 this year, I still wouldn't want Bronco back. We may have had a better record but, we saw repeatedly what Bronco's ceiling was, and we would have still lost to Utah.
I'm being dead serious. I know there are a lot of Bronco haters out there. I don't understand it but I accept it. We had a very good head coach in Bronco Mendenhall and now he is turning around an ACC doormat. You can usually tell how a coach is going to do with a team pretty quickly. We didn't get to see that last year because Hill and Jamaal are literally that good. This year we are seeing it. This team is in complete disarray and the worst part about it is, the coaches have no idea how to fix it. I don't see this coaching staff doing anything good with this team. We are going to have to change again to hope the next guy can get us back to Bronco's level.
You're forgetting that Bronco turned BYU around pretty quick (once again 2006 was his all around best team) and we had some good years from 2006-2009. But, as I've pointed out again and again, once we left an easier and familiar MWC schedule, the double digit win seasons went mostly out the window. You're also forgetting he had become Whittingham's punching bag with 5 straight losses to the U. Bronco had only a handful of wins vs great teams (above .700 winning %) and 2 of those wins were against FCS teams. The whole point of getting another coach is to try and go beyond Bronco's level - which was more 8 wins more often than not once we went independent. Its still too early to write off Sitake and want Bronco back.

I think this is ludicrous.
There were a lot of fans who, when asked, basically said any coach could do better than what Bronco was producing. Kingcoug, I'm not saying you were that person, but I think this year is a good example of how terrible that logic was. BYU is a unique place with huge challenges in fielding a decent football program. Bronco was able to get the most out of the program for over a decade. I suppose the haters are going to hate. Bronco left BYU so there's no point is saying we should have kept him. I do wonder if a part of him leaving had to do with fans who thought nothing short of "perfection" was good enough.

I'll just say I though Bronco did an absolutely bang up job at BYU and I'm missing his 9 win seasons this year.

That's just it. I don't believe Bronco always got the most out of our program or that what he did is as good as BYU can possibly be.

Wow. Well, good luck getting someone to live up to that expectation.

Let me ask, do you feel Lavell got the most out of the program? Careful how you answer, cause the 2 were statistically tied in win % and you can't tell me that Lavell in the WAC was playing stiffer competition.

Pretty much how I feel. Big Bronco fan. I like Sitake, but very few of his coaches under him.

I laugh out loud when I hear guys lambast Bronco for not winning many games against competition with .700 records. How many teams do? Oh Brother.

Yeah, heaven forbid Bronco live up to the expectation of getting an undefeated season during his 11 years, especially when he'd talk about a national championship. And you're right, I shouldn't have the expectation he do better than 3 -7 against our arch rival. What was I thinking?

As for Lavell, that's a little apples and oranges. He put BYU on the map, had a national title, and another season where we almost went undefeated with only 1 loss ('96). He also coached all the legends - McMahon, Young, Detmer, etc.

I give Bronco credit for the things he deserves credit for but that BYU can't do better than him is loser thinking.

BYU would be working on their 2nd undefeated season in a row right now if Bronco were the coach, but it honestly doesn't matter, he's gone and we have to worry about the current and next coaches, not the former.

Is this tongue in cheek or have you lost your mind?
