Spiff's Spots of Observation and Other Statistical Nonsense

Post by SpiffCoug »

  • BYU beat its 2nd straight Power 5 opponent. The last time BYU beat P5 teams in consecutive weeks was the final game of 2011 (Oregon St) and the opener in 2012 (Washington St).
  • The Cougars did have 3 touchdown passes, but threw for just 165 yards. It was the 2nd fewest passing yards with 3 TD passes. Only against UCF in 2014 did BYU have fewer passing yards (153) in a 3 TD passes game.
  • BYU converted 9 of 17 (.529) third downs. It was the third time in four games that BYU was above 50%. The last BYU had that kind of stretch was back in 2011 when BYU had a stretch of eight straight games above 50%.
  • The Cougars won the Passing Efficiency Rating (PER) battle and the game. PER is now 6-1 (.857) on the year and 52-7 (.881) the last five years.
  • Taysom Hill threw 3 TD passes. It was his first game with 3 TD passes since the season opener at Connecticut in 2014.
  • It was the first game since at least 2008 when the BYU game was a "push" in regards to the point spread.
  • BYU completed just 16 passes and marked the third straight game with fewer than 20 completions. The last time BYU failed to complete 20 passes in three games when they opened the 2013 season with five straight games.
  • With the win over the grey-clad Bulldogs, BYU improved to 38-9 (.809) over a grey helmeted team since 1989.
  • BYU's touchdown in the 2nd overtime was the sixth time this season the BYU offense scored on its final possession of the game (not counting one victory formation kneel down).
