Rooting Guide Week 6 20116

The goals for BYU are:

1. To achieve the highest ranking possible
2. To be bowl eligible and play the best bowl team possible
3. To win as many games as possible
4. To get into the Big 12
5. To be better than Utah

If you want to see these goals accomplished here is your rooting guide:

A. Cheer for BYU. Duh.

BYU (2-3) over Michigan St. (2-2)

B. Cheer for the team playing Utah. Because there is no reason to cheer for Utah

Arizona (2-3) over Utah (4-1)

C. Cheer for BYU’s opponents. This helps SOS which helps our overall ranking.

UCLA (3-2) over Arizona State (4-1)
Toledo (3-1) over Eastern Michigan (4-1)
Mississippi State (2-2) over Auburn (3-2)
Boise State (4-0) over New Mexico (2-2)
Cincinnati (3-2) over UConn (2-3)
Southern Utah (2-2) over UC Davis (1-4)
UMass (1-4) over Old Dominion (3-2)
Utah State (2-3) over Colorado State (2-3)

D. Cheer for teams playing teams ranked ahead of BYU. Cheer for unranked teams vs. ranked teams. If both teams are ranked ahead of BYU cheer for the higher ranked (Of course rules A-C trump rule D).

#1 Alabama over #16 Arkansas
Indiana over #2 Ohio St.
Boston College over #3 Clemson
Rutgers over #4 Michigan
Oregon over #5 Washington
Navy over #6 Houston
#8 Texas A&M over #9 Tennessee
#10 Miami over #23 Florida St.
Washington St. over #15 Stanford
#17 North Carolina over #25 Virginia Tech
LSU over #18 Florida
Texas over #20 Oklahoma
USC over #21 Colorado
Northern Illinois over #25 Western Michigan (Coaches Poll)

E. Hold your nose and cheer for the MWC in nonconference play. Also cheer for the better team in conference matchups. The stronger the conference the stronger our bowl opponent will be (Unless it violates rules A-D).

Air Force (4-0) over Wyoming (3-2)
Hawaii (2-3) over San Jose St. (1-4)
Nevada (2-3) over Fresno St. (1-4)
SDSU (3-1) over UNLV (2-3)

F. Cheer for teams playing potential programs that could get into the Big 12 over BYU (Unless it violates rules A-E)

Tulane over UCF
East Carolina over South Florida

G. Cheer for our Opponents’ opponents unless they are playing our opponents. This helps our SOS in virtually every SOS calculation. The more connected a team is to our opponents the more you should cheer for them (unless it violates rules A-F). For example, Oregon St. is the most connected team to our opponents as they play 4 games against them (UCLA, Arizona, Utah, Boise St.). The number by the team indicates how connected they are. If the numbers are equal take the team who has lost or will most likely lose to our opponents.

Oregon St. (4) over Cal (2)
Arkansas St. (2) over Georgia Southern
South Carolina (2) over Georgia
Akron over Miami OH
Central Michigan over Ball St.
Florida International over UTEP
Illinois over Purdue
Iowa over Minnesota
Iowa St. over Oklahoma St.
Kansas over TCU
Kansas St. over Texas Tech
Kentucky over Vanderbilt
Louisiana Tech over Western Kentucky
Notre Dame over NC St.
Ohio over Bowling Green
Penn St. over Maryland
Temple over Memphis
Tulsa over SMU

H. Cheer for the G5 team over the P5 team. Because it is fun (unless it violates rules A-G)

Army over Duke

I. It really doesn't matter:

Charlotte vs. Florida Atlantic
Georgia Tech vs. Pitt
Idaho vs. Louisiana Monroe
Kent St. vs. Buffalo
Marshall vs. North Texas
Southern Miss vs. UTSA
Syracuse vs. Wake Forest
Texas St. vs. Georgia St.
