Pitta Semifinalist for the Mackey Award
BYU senior tight end Dennis Pitta is one of eight semifinalists for the John Mackey Award, emblematic of the nation's top tight end, as announced by the Nassau County Sports Commission. Pitta, who caught a team-high 46 passes for 642 yards and five touchdowns this season, is joined on the list of semifinalists by...
Pittsburgh's Dorin Dickerson
Oregon's Ed Dickson
Florida's Aaron Hernandez
USC's Anthony McCoy
Iowa's Tony Moeaki
Notre Dame's Kyle Rudolph
Marshall's Cody Slate
Finalists for the award will be announced Nov. 23 and the winner will be announced Dec. 10.

I don't recognize many of these names. "Florida", "USC", and "Notre Dame" I recognize, sadly. Though maybe Ed Dickson does sound a little familiar...
Pitta had a great start to the season but has been strongly schemed against recently. Hopefully his next two games are huge for him (as well as being team wins)!

Re: Pitta Semifinalist for the Mackey Award
Is there a list anywhere of their accomplishments this year (yards, ypc, tds)?
I'm just a regular, everyday normal guy,
I can't afford a car, I use public transportation,
I don't mind, I read till I reach my destination,
sometimes a newspaper, sometimes a book,
the money I save, this stuff is off the hook,

Moeaki was playing hurt for Iowa a few games backShort_Change wrote:Moeaki is LDS and my brother works with his relative.
Dickson is likely the favorite right now - but not because his numbers are any better' rather more for his reputation in a high speed offense.. (probably doesn't deserve the hype)
McCoy had the big high profile td catch vs Notre Dame (BUT HAS DONE NOTHING SINCE)
Pitta has kind of fallen off the radar as of late (but not much you can do when he's double teamed the entire game)
Iowa and USC have struggled the last few weeks; and Oregon keeps putting up big numbers (even in their loss to Stanford)
Pitta really needs a couple big games the next 2 weeks... but that obviously won't come if he's double teamed and we need to go to open targets to win the games.
Aaron Hernandez, TE FLA 46 571 2td
Dennis Pitta, TE BYU 45 624 5td
Dorin Dickerson, TE PITT 43 496 10td
Ed Dickson, TE ORE 37 488 5td
Anthony McCoy TE USC 17 382 1td
Tony Moeaki TE IOW 26 302 4td
Pittas #s were quite a bit better last year at this point; and he finished with 83 catches and over 1000 yards- he'd have to have very big games to match that production

Re: Pitta Semifinalist for the Mackey Award
Cody Slate has torn knee ligaments and will miss the rest of the season. He is likely out of the running. Bummer for him. I do think that Dennis will make the finalist list and will win it based on the performance over his entire career, not just this last season. I expect him to have a really good game on Saturday.

I don't think Pitta will get it unless has some stellar games against AFA and Utah. It is a shame because he definitely deserves it!! Unfortunately, people who vote on this kind of stuff probably only look at stats and nothing else. He will be good in the NFL.

Dennis finished with 9 receptions/111 yards/ and 2 touchdowns
and is currently the leader in receptions and yardage for tight ends
Hernandez doesn't show any receptions for the FLA game (is he hurt? he did play against SC) They do have 2 games left before the bowl games (though I'm not sure if the SEC championship game counts - depends on when the votes go in)
http://scores.espn.go.com/ncf/boxscore?gameId=293250057
Dickerson has 2 games left, including a home game vs Cincy Dec 5
prior to today
= Dennis is now the leader in receptions by at least 8
the leader in yards by a fairly large margin (150+)
and it still 3 tds behind Dickerson

Re: Pitta Semifinalist for the Mackey Award
Andrew George has comparable stats to most of these guys. If Pitta wasn't around he would be not only in the running, but also a front-runner. We are lucky to have both of these guys playing for BYU.Mars wrote:Pitta has 7 TDs this season now.craigoscarson wrote: Aaron Hernandez, TE FLA 46 571 2td
