Ken N was such a serious candidate that BYU didn't even pick him up from the airport.

My biggest beef with Holmoe is that he let the boosters get to him and Bronco to the point where Mendenhall no longer wanted to be at BYU. Without a clear heir apparent or a large potential pool, I think Holmoe needed to do a better job of hanging on to the guy who had restored honor and prestige to the program.

That said, Bronco is clearly better as a "turnaround CEO" than a Top 10 CEO.

Back to the point of the thread, I guess I get now why Hadley said over and over and over in his interview that coaching is all about relationships. He was referring to relationships with players, but it's pretty clear that who you know is much more important than what you know with this staff. And Hadley said he was very close with Gilford and had just spent the previous 3 years coaching with Fesi. I mean, even if the program was such a dumpster fire that nobody in the national pool would want to coach there unless they felt some loyalty to the school, I've got to think that there have been a bunch of other alumni now in coaching that could have applied. To not interview anyone--even the guy they hired--would break so many HR rules at any respectable institution.
But at least Hadley played and GA'd under Mendenhall.

BYU basketball is fine. We've been in games against the two top-15 teams in our conference. What coaching decisions would have made a difference at LMU? More Worthington and Bergesen?

Who else was Holmoe to hire for head football coach? If he hires Nuimatalolo, Cougar Nation revolts because we're running the option. Cougar Nation revolts if we hire Grimes - or anyone else - other than Ty freaking Detmer. He had to take that chance and let it play out.

With hindsight, it is clear that we cannot survive front loaded schedules. We're not just playing LSU or Wisconsin or Utah. We play all three in consecutive weekends. I'm afraid we will see a similar breakdown the next couple of years - Arizona, Wisconsin and Washington road games in September? Too much.

But had Holmoe NOT scheduled these games, we would complain about weak schedules.
I agree with what you are saying. My problem with Holmoe is he took a long shot at getting Kwhit and when that didn't work, the only guy he pursued was Sitake. Lance Anderson at Stanford was interested but he said "they had bigger fish they were looking at". Coach N at Navy wasn't seriously considered because they told him he couldn't bring his option. There were other guys that could have been considered but other than trying to get Kwhit, Sitake was the only guy and that is what irritates me. We should consider all interested candidates and pick the one that brings the best option to win. IMO we didn't do that, we were too obsessed with getting a former Lavell player.
I don't think any of us really know what Holmoe did or didn't do.

We know that Niumatalolo flew out to Utah and interviewed. Met with Elder Oaks. That's pretty serious consideration. Apparently, Holmoe tried to convince him to be the head coach, instead of an option coach.

We also know that Pete Carroll was contacted about Bevell. And, not sure we could have afforded him or convinced him to accept an offer - even if he was the right fit. Similar analysis for most other "candidates" that were coaching in the NFL.

What other guys am I missing? Cougar fans would have revolted if we promoted Robert Anae.

There is no indication that Lance Anderson is or was a better head coaching candidate than Sitake. I think Anderson is better with fundamentals, technique and as DC. But, I actually lean that Anderson's personality isn't the right fight for a head coach.

Kilani Sitake was a good, but not great, hire. He may yet prove to be a good coach.
we have quotes from 2 candidates including coach N from Navy that they didn't feel like they were seriously considered. That is the point of my post.
