So for everyone that loves the Honor Code enforcement would you be down with your local ward and bishop doing the same to you and your family?
For what its worth my experience with my local ward is exactly the same as it was at my time at BYU.
I agree. If my neighbor was in my ward, and I'm throwing keggers or screwing the nanny, I would expect them to say something to the Bishop. To which I would respond "But they taught me correct principles, now let me govern myself!"

As for the grooming standards, I saw some news segment where they interviewed a bunch of University of Oregon students and it made me really grateful BYU has a grooming code. I think most of us would agree that there should be some sort of grooming standard (if you don't agree don't bother trying to convince me). I think most of them are what they are, to keep enforcement simpler. Imagine trying to enforce "Beards must be kept neatly trimmed." How on earth do you check that? How neat is neat enough? Instead of trying to define and enforce a "neat beard" rule is impossible, so instead you make the rule clean shaven.

And for those who oppose enforcement, a rule without enforcement is not even a suggestion.

Ha! So true.

In discussions like this I am always reminded of MTC security, circling the MTC in their white vans not to make sure the missionaries are safe inside, but to make sure no missionary leaves. You know, the grown adults that volunteered and are paying to be there. Can't let them escape!
Maybe I'm misremembering, but when I was at the MTC anyone was free to leave at any time. Just go to the office and tell them that you were ending your mission. They would promptly provide passage back to where you were from. This happened to a few missionaries in the MTC that I knew.

Life becomes infinitely more complicated when you pick needless fights make needless and arbitrary rules just to make yourself seem better than others. (As we see so much at BYU)
Fixed that for ya, friend.
As has been pointed out by others in this thread, the honor code simplifies a lot of things for students. Don't have to worry about drugs, coeds being in your dorm room all night, etc that are part for the course through other college campuses. I'm fine with BYU setting itself apart. Don't agree with the HC? Don't go there. Doesn't make you less of a person before the Lord.

Do some ppl get off using it as a "better than you" attitude? Sure. But ppl do that with the gospel too. Doesn't make the gospel less valid.

The honor code helps promote a really great student environment that I enjoyed and appreciated. It's those that kicked against the pricks that just made things miserable for themselves (with endless complaining about different rules). To be fair, I didn't have any dealings with reportings or the honor code office in general, so I didn't see any direct injustices that some talk about.

I've got no problem with BYU's honor code. we're splitting hairs here (no pun intended). I'm +/- the whole beard thing. Who cares. If that's a reason for consternation, go to the U or USU or your local/state college and enjoy your bearded life. Absolutely nothing wrong with that. Currently if you want to go to BYU, learn to shave for a few years and don't worry about it. Life becomes a lot easier if you commit to something and then live it instead of kicking against the pricks.

Life becomes infinitely more complicated when you pick needless fights (as we see too often in the church).
Nicely said.
